Louie: Pilot Review

My 8th grade English teacher would describe Louis CK as someone who is rude crude and unattractive. The great thing about Louis is he knows he is all of these things and embellishes it. I've seen three of Louis comedy specials and I have to say the man is talented. Really good comedians always impress me. I cannot understand how it is they come up with new material at the rate that they do. His new show Louie feels like somewhat of an autobiography of his life. The show is acted written directed and edited by Louis which is very odd. Odd because you typically wouldn't see this on a network. But supposedly FX wanted him so badly that they offered him 200,000 to basically do what he wanted, which apparently was a much lower sum then other networks offered him albeit without the creative control he now has.

His show is set up as two vignettes, or extended skits that are intercut with Louis stand up routines that usually intertwine with the skit.

In the pilot we see Louis take his children to a school field trip, accompanied by an incompetent school bus driver. It's a hilarious bit, especially if you have had experiences with such bus drivers in grade school like I did.

The second bit revolves around Louis trying to get back in the dating game after a divorce. As his brother points out now that Louis is free to pursue any girl he wants, there's no girl that will want an old 42 year old. For the moment this appears to be true as his date clearly doesn't see anything right about Louis. It makes me wonder how the two got set up in the first place.

Overall as a short 30 minute comedy show it is very funny and has promise to be a fulfilling and great show. Hell it's already been renewed for a third season so that means it must be doing well.I also want to point out that in future reviews that I will use Louie and Louis interchangeably, because let's face it, it's Louis CK.
