Christopher Nolan's Inception is hardcore science fiction done for mainstream audiences. If you understood the film upon first viewing I applaud you. The film is structured to be a massive undertaking that demands multiple viewings in order to truly grasp what is taking place. The premise is simple, however the film is anything but simple. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as a thief named Dominic Cobb. However Dominic is not your ordinary thief. He actually does not steal physical materials, instead he steals what is inside an individuals mind through their very own dreams.
Thrusting you straight into the dream world, Christopher Nolan immediately plants the idea of what the film is going to be about from the onset. The way he is able to juggle the multiple dreams is simply breathtaking. When the van finally begins to fall into the water below, what normally would last seconds, ends up taking up the last third of the film. Here is an example of what I am talking about. Someone actually edited the pieces of film together to play in "real-time". It's very interesting especially if you are a fan of the film.
The thing that continuously works for me is the films editing. Each time I watch the film, I fail to understand how this film did not get an Academy Award Nomination for Editing. The films structure combined with the content and length make me wonder how something like 127 Hours could receive a nomination but this film could not. It blows my mind how Nolan was able to come up with the concepts he did in this film. Everything breathes complexity and there do not seem to be any noticeable plot holes.
It's hard to say more about this film that hasn't already been said by countless other reviews, so why try to one up anyone else. Instead I'll leave you with one of my favorite fight scenes ever put on celluloid, along with how they pulled it off.
